Describe a specific funding purpose
Saying only “I want to expand” does not explain the required amount. Construction businesses and SMEs can divide their proposed spending into materials, labour, machinery, project mobilisation, transport or inventory.
For each item, note the estimated cost, when it may be paid and why it is needed by the business. This also helps you sense-check the amount requested.
Understand project cash-flow timing
Contractors may pay suppliers and workers before receiving progress payments. Outline the project phase, materials schedule, expected payment milestones and collection dates.
Allow for possible delays, cost changes or slow customer payments. Projected receipts should not be described as cash already received.
Build a realistic SME expansion budget
For equipment, consider quotations and installation. For a new outlet, include renovation, rental deposits and initial running costs. For inventory, estimate quantities and expected sales cycles.
Separate one-off investments from recurring operating expenses so that maintenance, utilities and staff costs are not overlooked.
Connect the plan to your existing business
Explain real customer demand, orders, staffing capacity and historical operations. Distinguish confirmed contracts from opportunities still under negotiation.
Never invent contracts, sales records or future revenue. Clear explanations can support informed discussion but cannot ensure a positive lending decision.
Prepare for your first consultation
A concise project summary, estimated budget, proposed timeline, existing operating information and key risks provide a useful starting point. Sensitive originals are not needed for an initial WhatsApp enquiry.
Update the assumptions if the project changes. A consultation may help organise your questions, but only the relevant institution decides whether financing is available.
